Testimonials
(with thanks to my wonderful students for making this the best job ever!)
“Jem discussed with my daughter what she was hoping to achieve from her lessons. She enjoyed her guitar lessons and learnt and improved in skill quickly.”
“Jem is a brilliant teacher! Seems to know exactly what I need to do to progress forward. When I started with Jem I wasn’t a novice but I wouldn’t say I was an intermediate either. Jem helped me put all my knowledge together and it’s made me a much happier guitarist.”
“I’ve been back and forth with the guitar for many years and decided to start having lessons with Jem in a attempt to improve my knowledge and ability on the guitar. Jem tailor made the sessions to support my level of ability. I would highly recommend Jem as a tutor.”
“Jem is a fantastic guitar teacher. Very encouraging, supportive and adaptable to my forever changing requirements. I find my weekly hour lesson with Jem really beneficial, and an escape from reality. I highly recommend Jem from beginners right through to advanced. Wonderful teaching style. Thanks Jem, here’s to many more lessons together.”
“Really enjoying my lessons with Jem! As 29 year old wanting to jump back into guitar Jem is great at being adaptable and letting me lead on what I want to learn and how i’d like to learn, and guiding me when i’m unsure. From the start Jem has always been really kind and understanding, and makes the sessions enjoyable, and clearly has a really in depth knowledge of a range of guitar playing styles and genres. The lessons aren’t at all like the music lessons I remember having as a child ( In the best way!). Highly recommend, Jem’s an excellent teacher.”
“Jem has been an excellent guitar teacher, very attentive and supportive with tons of insight! I had a lot of questions and things I struggled with, and she always seemed to find the best way to guide me through things. Bringing your own songs to practice was always welcome too, which made learning even more fun – 100% recommend Jem!! :)”
“My 9-year-old son has been taking guitar lessons with Jem, and we couldn’t be happier. Jem is incredibly patient, encouraging, and has a real gift for making learning engaging for kids. Jem is a wonderful teacher and my son has made great progress in his guitar playing!”
“I absolutely love my guitar lessons with Jemma. Having not really played for about 20 or more years, she has been brilliant at encouraging and inspiring me to get back into playing – helping me with skills and gaps I had from being a self taught teenager! She’s also great at embracing whatever musical styles you’re into. Can’t recommend enough!”
“Jem is absolutely amazing, she is so friendly, patient and really positive. I love my guitar lessons and feel I have learnt so much. If you’re thinking of having guitar lessons I really recommend Jem! She’s the best guitar teacher I have had!”
“My 11 year old has really enjoyed learning the guitar with Jem. She is a kind, creative and responsive teacher and we highly recommend her.”
“Jem is a great teacher. I am a complete beginner and she has taught me for almost a year now. In that time she has been unbelievably patient and helpful, allowing me to tailor our lessons exactly how I prefer. We have had sessions that focus on specific techniques, broader understanding of different genres, learning songs and how to practice at home effectively. Jem has been at the heart of all the progress I have made over the past year.”
Anyone can play guitar!
If you’ve ever though about learning to play guitar, I’m here for you! It’s my job to help you get started, to guide you along the way and to help you improve and develop as a musician. Music is for everyone, and my teaching experience has shown me that with a little patience and dedication anyone can gain enjoyment from playing the guitar.
I’ll guide you along the way
I teach all ages and all styles. Enjoy learning guitar with individualized lessons focused on enjoyment and musical expression. As well as songs, styles and technique, I enjoy teaching songwriting, music theory, improvising, sight reading (though it’s by no means a requirement for being a musician) – if it’s relevant to you I’ll build it into your lessons. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced player, everyone moves at different speeds, and we only have so much time to practice. I’ll make sure you know what to prioritise and what to work on in between lessons.

Pass grade exams
…but only if you’d like to! I’ve guided students through exams with Trinity, ABRSM, Rockschool and LCM exam boards. Either way, I have a good library of teaching materials and can suggest some great guitar books and resources for you. I’ll give you appropriate music to learn at each point in your guitar journey, to broaden your repertoire and give you confidence. ‘Stretchy’ ones will push you to develop your technique. And long term projects to chip away at over time give you a target to aim for.

Lessons built around you
I plan your lessons with music at the right level for you to see improvement. Good relationships are at the core of successful teaching, and I’ll always do my best to make the lessons fun, engaging and interesting. I’ll help you to build your confidence and above all to enjoy playing music. From Baroque to the Beatles, Country Blues to Heavy Metal, there is something for everyone in the guitar!
I’m experienced in finding enjoyable music for students of any age, at any level to play, whatever your tastes.

I teach online too
As well as in person lessons, I’m currently teaching online via zoom. The beauty of online lessons is that you can learn from home without having to travel, but you get the benefit of an experienced teacher who can answer your questions in real time and give you instant feedback. Contact me to find out more about online lessons.
